Beyond the Silence, 2025

Beyond the Silence is an immersive soundscape with Graphic Score I created to invite audiences into an intimate engagement with women’s testimonies. Through this work, I draw upon decolonial oral traditions that preserve histories outside written colonial archives.
This installation was born from Echoes of Experiences, an initiative I founded to facilitate two art-based workshops with women survivors of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). In these workshops, I worked closely with participants to help them externalize and reframe their experiences of violence. Together, we transformed memory into a collective feminist strategy of resistance.
During these sessions, participants translated their FGM experiences into graphic scores, visual compositions that express layered, complex emotions through abstract forms. And into vocal sounds, translating their drawings into auditory expressions. For example, humming was used to represent trauma.
One participant, a 58-year-old woman, stated that this was the first time she had ever shared her testimony, expressed it through abstract drawing, and translated it into sound. After the workshops, she said she feel a sense of relief.
Another participant shared with me that she was unable to produce any sound with her vocal cords. She was so scared that she remained silent.
This deeply moved me to create a large drawing of a larynx, positioned horizontally to mirror the posture of girls lying on the ground or on a surgical table during the cutting procedure, reflecting silence. "In that position, my own body lost all strength—I was unable to move or defend myself," a survivor said.
These scores inspired me the large-scale wall graphic score that anchors the installation. The scores are also performed through the voices of the women themselves and can be accessed via a QR code on each listener’s personal device. In doing so, I create a space for healing that merges artistic expression, sound, performance, and community participation.
This work engages directly with bodily memory, gestures, scars, and movement become a living record of colonial and gendered violence. I see the body as an active archive of resistance, refusing historical amnesia.
I do not aim to simply document trauma; rather, my work fosters resistance and healing, which are essential essential practices in decolonial feminist strategies.

ما وراء الصمت هو مشهد صوتي غامر يتضمن رسمًا تدوينيًا صوتيًا قمتُ بابتكاره لدعوة الجمهور إلى تفاعل حميمي مع شهادات النساء. من خلال هذا العمل، أستلهم تقاليد شفوية مناهضة للاستعمار تحفظ التاريخ خارج الأرشيفات الاستعمارية المكتوبة.
انبثقت هذه التركيبة الفنية من مبادرة أصداء التجربة، وهي مبادرة أسستها لتيسير ورشتين عمل فنية مع نساء ناجيات من ختان الإناث. في هذه الورش، عملتُ عن قرب مع المشاركات لمساعدتهن على التعبير عن تجاربهن مع العنف وإعادة صياغتها. معًا، حولنا الذاكرة إلى استراتيجية نسوية جماعية للمقاومة.
خلال هذه الجلسات، قامت المشاركات بترجمة تجاربهن مع ختان الإناث إلى رسوم تدوينية صوتية — تركيبات بصرية تُعبّر عن مشاعر معقدة ومتعددة الطبقات من خلال أشكال تجريدية — وإلى أصواتٍ باستخدام الحنجرة، حيث حوّلن رسوماتهن إلى تعبيرات سمعية. على سبيل المثال، تم استخدام الطنين (humming) للتعبير عن الصدمة.
إحدى المشاركات، وهي امرأة تبلغ من العمر 58 عامًا، صرّحت بأن هذه هي المرة الأولى التي تشارك فيها شهادتها، وتعبّر عنها من خلال الرسم التجريدي وتحوّلها إلى صوت. وبعد انتهاء الورش، قالت إنها شعرت بالارتياح.
مشاركة أخرى أخبرتني بأنها لم تكن قادرة على إصدار أي صوت من حبالها الصوتية. كانت خائفة جدًا لدرجة أنها بقيت صامتة.
لقد ألهمني ذلك لرسم حنجرة كبيرة، أفقيًا لتعكس وضعية الفتيات المستلقيات على الأرض أو على طاولة الجراحة أثناء عملية القطع،في حاله صمت.
"في تلك الوضعية، فقد جسدي كل قوّته — لم أكن قادرة على الحركة أو الدفاع عن نفسي"، قالت إحدى الناجيات.
و تركت هذه الرسوم التدوينية أثرًا عميقًا في نفسي، فارسمت الرسم الجداري الكبير الذي يُشكّل العنصر المحوري في التركيب. يتم أداء هذه الرسوم أيضًا من خلال أصوات النساء أنفسهن، ويمكن الوصول إليها عبر رمز QR باستخدام الجهاز الشخصي لكل مستمع/ة. من خلال ذلك، أخلق مساحة للشفاء تجمع بين التعبير الفني، والصوت، والأداء، والمشاركة المجتمعية.
هذا العمل يتعامل مباشرة مع الذاكرة الجسدية؛ حيث تصبح الإيماءات، والندوب، والحركة سجلًا حيًّا للعنف الاستعماري والنوعي. أرى الجسد كأرشيف حي وفاعل للمقاومة، يرفض النسيان التاريخي.
